Choosing a data file format for neural science / technology lab. HDF5 vs. netCDF-4?

by plato_the_reborn@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Jun 3, 2007 at 03:11 PM

I have no experience with either HDF or netCDF, but I am considering
using one or the other in the latest version of our lab's data
handling routines. I have read that netCDF is simpler, while HDF5 is
more powerful. What reasons are there to use HDF5 libraries now that
netCDF-4 will use HDF as the storage layer in the next release?

We require the capability to send recorded data in small chunks across
a network in real-time, as well as to record large, and complex, data
sets to disk. A simple interface is nice to begin with, and an easy
learning curve is great for a diverse lab, but more advanced functions
could certainly be used. Built-in sup****t of HDF5 im****ts in MATLAB
could be a big benefit. Our equipment currently runs with a compact
and powerful custom software suite, so a minimum of overhead is ideal.

Any advice?
