TOO HOT FOR DESERT TRAVELERS

by Eve-EarthCharterFoundation <eve@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Nov 13, 2008 at 01:29 AM

As a sign of what's in store for humanity when temperatures rise by an
expected 2C-4C degrees this century, authorities in outback Australia
have decided to close the Simpson Desert during the hot summer months.

The conservation park and regional reserve, covering more than 3.6
million hectares, will be closed from December 1 until March 15.

South Australia's Environment Department spokesperson Trevor Naismith
told Daily Planet Media that the Simpson was inhospitable in the
extreme summer heat and visitors would be risking their lives trying
to cross the desert in the hottest months.

Travelers who come to Australia wanted to experience the real outback
of Australia and drive four-wheel-driving experience. But many
visitors had no understanding of the enormous distances involved and
the extremely hot desert conditions.

Alternatives to the Simpson were the nearby Witjira National Park and
the Dalhousie Springs complex, which don't present the same dangerous
conditions as the sweltering central desert.
