U.S. President-elect Barack Obama is getting plenty of advice on what
he must do when his administration takes over early next year. He
would be wise to give the planet's environment his top priority by
spelling out a clean energy strategy that addresses oil addiction and
climate change by creating a million green jobs.
The world desperately needs a climate treaty and Obama would be best
advised to appoint Al Gore as the USA Climate Ambassador-At-Large to
ensue that the United Nations climate summit in Copenhagen next year
approves a climate treaty that binds all countries to reduce their
climate changing emissions by at least 20 percent by 2020 and 50
percent by 2050.
Faced with a 10 trillion dollar debt America's economic and
environmental salvation lies with a high-tech, clean energy future.
First up Obama will need to get all the tech smarts together and then
outline the critical path for a transition from the old tech of dirty
fossil fuels to the new tech of clean renewable energy.
But that's the easy part. The hard stuff lies in getting legislation
through the new Congress where the same old polluters - the big biz of
oil and coal - have already paid in full to their lobbyists and want
back value for their money spent. Don't think that a new President and
all his men and women can get away with anything of "change" without a
huge fight. Big Oil and Big Coal won't be loosening their grip of
massive economic influence unless it serves their interests.
