complexing agents - what governs recovery of the complexed cations?

Dear newsgroup,
when reading about complexing agents (EDTA, citrate etc etc) I have become

confused.
They very well complex cations like Ca2+, Mg2+.
When such complexes have formed, dissociation constants apply for their
dissociation.
But from an engineering point of view, such a complexing agent is a
"tool",
and needs to be recovered.
The question I put in this newsgroup is how to release the complexed
cations?
What governs? temperature, presence of other ions (CO32-) that like to
precipitate with the cations, electrolyte? ( hope not acid or base! )
Best regards,
   Marcel
