| I'm sorry but S. Ossetia and Abkhazia are in georgia as boundries were
drawn
| after the fall of the soviet union. Ossetians and Abkhazians are free to
| leave if they don't like the georgian rule. If they would rather live
under
| russian rule they can go there. I'm sure the russians will welcome them
and
| help them to get a new start. I'd bet. Georgia would even compensate
them
| for their properties if they leave peacefully.
Who had the right to draw the boundaries that way? Sorry, but drawing the
boundaries wrong is not acceptable. Ossetians and Abkhazians are free to
leave the Georgia _and_ take their land with them, especially considering
the _long_ history of having lived in the same place. They can choose to
be part of Russia, or a part of Georgia, or choose to be independent.
| However there is another option Ossetians and Abkhazians can disarm and
| remain as a resident of Georgia under Georgian rule and protection if
any
| remaining. Personally i'd disarm and retain the land it cannot be that
bad.
| the rest of georgia seem to be liking the freedoms granted them.
I'm all in favor of Georgia being free to choose their own destiny. But I
don't accept that they have a right to drag Ossetia and/or Abkhazia along
if those people don't want to go along.
| If the Ossetians and Abkhazians intentions are truly peaceful than there
| should be no problem with laying down arms and accept Georgian rule.
If the Georgians intentions are truly peaceful than there should be no
problem
with laying down arms and accept independenc of Ossetia and Abkhazia.
| Either way Russia has only one course of action to save face among 2/3
of
| the world. carry their citizens and military equipment/personel back
across
| their borders. May I suggest crow for dinner?
I agree that Russia must pull back to where they were before, which
happens
to have been in S. Ossetia since the 1994 war.
| Phil what you present is rewarding the squaters and russia for mis
behavior
| at the cost of georgia. IMHO
You think that Ossetians and Abkhazians are squatters? They've been in
those
lands for hundreds of years. Check your history. The trangressions
involved
do NOT include the existance of Ossetians in Ossetia and Abkhazians in
Abkhazia.
The transgressions DO include the cross border fighting that has been
going on
between S. Ossetia and Georgia for the last century, even when they both
were
part of the Soviet Union.
The major most recent transgressions were:
1. S. Ossetian rebels attacked Georgia, again. Georgia claimed this
included
cross border raids.
2. Georgia started military actions aimed at S. Ossetia.
3. Russia sent additional troops and equipment into S. Ossetia from N.
Ossetia
to add to their _existing_ peacekeeping role.
4. Georgia expanded their military actions including shelling of parts of
S. Ossetia.
5. Russia rolled into Georgia from S. Ossetia, in part to decimate
Georgian
military, and in part to bully Georgia (this is wrong, even though
Georgia
sort of needed it).
Russia absolutely needs to pull out of Georgia and return to S. Ossetia.
But
the world needs to accept that S. Ossetia has the right to choose their
own
destiny, even if that means joining the Russian Federation. Russia should
also
accept that N. Ossetia has an equal right to be independent, maybe joining
with
S. Ossetia in the process. One difficulty is that it will be hard for the
world
to see if the decisions by Ossetians is their own choice, since the
Ossetians
are speakers of the Russian language since well before the Bolshevik
Revolution
(some of which was sup****ted by an infamous Ossetian by the name of Josef
Stalin).
What is needed is peace in that region _and_ self-determination by
Ossetians,
Abkhazians, Georgians, and all the other groups (Chechens are not far from
the
area, for example).
Russia did things it should not have done, and the US needs to stand up to
that.
But this should not be a case of US insisting that S. Ossetia being forced
to be
under Georgian rule.
